What are CFA Piles and How Do They Work
Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles, also known as auger cast piles, are a type of deep foundation widely used in construction to support structures in challenging soil conditions. They are formed by drilling into the ground using a hollow-stemmed auger, which is then gradually withdrawn while concrete is pumped through the stem to fill the void created by the auger. Reinforcement, if required, can be inserted into the wet concrete to enhance the pile’s strength.
The CFA process begins with the auger being driven into the ground to the desired depth, displacing the soil around it. As the auger is withdrawn, concrete is injected continuously, maintaining pressure to prevent the hole from collapsing. This method ensures that the pile is formed without the need for temporary casings or dewatering, which are often required in other piling techniques.
